I have found that alienation has become a major problem in our society. In the last 20 years there has been
a sharp decline in social connectedness, even with the rise of social media. This alienation has a significant effect on a person's mental health and can lead to more severe problems in society as whole.
I came up with aliennation to help bring light to this problem. aliennation is a series of interactive installations promoting both the formation of social bonds and finding ways to be alone in a more positive way. Each unique installation would provide an experience for viewers that is meant to inspire creativity and create a feeling of connection to the community. In addition to these installations, an activity book is available for a more personal approach.
This project was completed to fulfill my graduation requirements in the form of a capstone thesis project for my BSD in Visual Communications Design from The Ohio State University. It was on display at Urban Arts Space in Columbus, Ohio as a part of the Department of Design Spring Exhibition from March 29 through April 8, 2016. Part of the installation was installed in the gallery space for patrons to interact with.
For this part of the project, I used a cut vinyl for text and icons, which were then applied to the painted sections. The final exhibit contained a chalkboard, selfie spot, buttons, and an activity book for visitors to take home with them.
